What is Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to reduce the size of the labia minora and also, in some instances, reshape the area of the smaller inner lips of the vagina (vulva).

The surgery is performed for two main reasons.

Labiaplasty

One is for comfort as an enlarged labia can be a great cause of pain. This pain can be constant or it may be there when certain activities are undertaken such as cycling or running. The cause can also vary, for some it is genetics, others find the discomfort of the labia post-pregnancy or childbirth, while the unavoidable process of ageing can also be the predominant factor.

The other reason for surgery is aesthetic change. There is no such thing as a perfect labia, nor one that should be considered unsightly, however people can have preferences relating to their appearance. Enlarged labia minora can then go on to impact confidence and self-esteem as they can show through bathing suits and yoga pants and so the appearance of the labia becomes a mental health concern.

As with any other physical concern, the impact on mental health can be large and negative.

Labiaplasty surgery can tighten and reduce the size of the labia, creating the desired appearance and more importantly, reducing the discomfort.

Patient Suitability for Labiaplasty

In this page, we cannot begin to determine whether any potential patient may be suitable for labiaplasty.

Instead, the consultation is of crucial importance. This is your opportunity to talk and discuss the reasons for the potential surgery and why you are considering this option. The surgeon can then use their expertise to suggest whether surgery is truly in your best interests and then also provide a plan of best action. How would they perform the surgery, what results are achievable?

All questions would be answered and a detailed quote provided where suitable.

As with all leading surgeons, Anca Breahna would only ever recommend a procedure when it is truly in a person’s best interest.

In broad terms, those who have concerns about the appearance of their labia, or have comfort issues are likely to be suitable candidates.

Your full medical history would always be taken into consideration and surgery would only be recommended with your ongoing welfare to the fore.

Procedure

Labiaplasty is a procedure usually performed under local anaesthetic. The change in appearance, size and shape would have been discussed at consultation and this then made a reality in the operation.

The technique used by Anca Breahna, or another surgeon would vary depending on each patient as an individual and the results sought.

What is of greater importance than listing many variations in technique is to reassure you that Anca is a vastly experienced surgeon who is able to utilise a wide range of skilled techniques and knows which one to use for which patient. Having this experience and surgical expertise means that the right option is chosen, she can call from the full range of surgical options.

Two options are the straight-line reduction (also known as “trim labiaplasty”) of the redundant tissue or the V-shape cut to reduce the overall length of the labia ( or “wedge excision”). Depending on the amount of excess tissue, sometimes a clitoral hood reduction may be indicated to improve symptoms and avoid a “top heavy” appearance.

Recovery

In a typical recovery the patient can:

  • return home the same day of the operation
  • Have little downtime as light activities can be undertaken after 48 hours
  • Manage any minimal pain with mild painkillers
  • shower immediately post-surgery
  • See that swelling peaks within 2-3 days and rapidly recedes in the following weeks
  • Be able to drive within two weeks
  • Return to sexual intercourse within 6 weeks

Are there risks?

This treatment will cause moderate swelling and bruising, that will ease within a few days. There is also a risk of bleeding and wound separation, but this is rare.

Patient satisfaction with labiaplasty is extremely high, it is a surgery that delivers the changes sought at consultation.

About Nearby Chester

Chester is a beautiful walled city located within the county of Cheshire and on the River Dee.

The city was founded as Castrum, the Roman fort located there called Deva Vitrix – this was one of the main army camps in the UK. Deva then became a major settlement in its own right.

Chester has a long and rich history, it was given city status as far back as 1541 and its importance is shown by the castle and walls, these remaining among the most complete city walls in the UK. The castle received numerous extra fortifications through the centuries, the initial castle built under the instructions of William the Conqueror.

Chester remained important through later centuries, for instance the nearby Newtown, with the Shropshire Union Canal were key to distribution.

The city is now a popular one for tourists, this a key industry, so too are public administration and retail.

A large number of well-known celebrities and famous people were born in Chester, or lived in the city, these include Russ Abbot, Beth Tweddle, Ben Foden and many people’s favourite James Bond – Daniel Craig.
