Blepharoplasty / Eyelid Lift Surgery

Blepharoplasty, or Eyelid Lift Surgery or Eye Bag Surgery, is a procedure used to treat sagging eyelids.

As the eyes age, the skin stretches and the muscles that support the eye begin to weaken, causing the eyelid to droop and deeper folds to develop. This can result in a tired, aged look, that may leave you feeling self-conscious.

The aim is to provide a more youthful, fresh and natural appearance to the upper and lower eyelids, improve the drooping, tired eye look and remove redundant skin.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty can be performed under local anaesthetic and as a day case treatment. The incision is made in the natural crease above the eyelashes and extends at the side of the eye. Excess skin is removed from the upper eyelid, with repositioning of the fat deposits and tightening of the muscle.

Lower Blepharoplasty

For lower blepharoplasty, general anaesthetic is recommended as an inpatient. Through an incision made just below the lash line, the skin is lifted from the lower lid and the excess fat is redistributed or removed. The skin is then re-draped and the excess removed. The surgery may sometimes require a tightening of the lower eyelid (canthopexy).

The eyes will experience swelling and bruising that will last for some weeks after the surgery, and sleeping on your back on a couple of pillows is recommended. Wearing sunglasses can help, reducing eye sensitivity to light. Final results will be visible after a few months and you can expect your eyes to look less puffy and more youthful in appearance.

Frequently asked questions

You may be a suitable candidate for a blepharoplasty  if you are experiencing drooping, tired looking eyelids. A full assessment prior to any eyelid surgery will address the cause for your drooping eyelids and determine your suitability.

The discomfort caused by a surgical procedure is eradicated by suitable anaesthesia for the actual operation, with a course of appropriate pain relief to ease the tenderness felt afterwards.

Common risks are swelling and bruising which will subside in a matter of weeks. Less frequent risks include bleeding, infection, abnormal scarring, ectropion (lower eyelid pulled out), lagophthalmos (inability to fully close the eyes), ptosis (drooping of the eyelid), scleral show, dry eyes, conjunctivitis, grittiness, eye watering (epiphora) and eyelash loss. Extremely rare risks are scarring of the cornea, blindness and diplopia (double vision).

Swelling and bruising to the eye area can be fairly significant and may take up to 2 weeks to resolve. Use of cold packs and witch-hazel eye packs postoperatively can help with swelling and bruising. A period of up to 2 weeks off work may be required. Upper blepharoplasty, in particular, has a fairly quick recovery and high patient satisfaction.
