Breast Implant Removal And Uplift

After breast implant surgery the scar surrounding the implant (capsule) can cause discomfort and / or cosmetic concerns. This usually happens 10 – 15 years after the initial breast augmentation, and is a natural process. After this time the implants may be replaced, however not all women still feel the desire to enhance the size of the breasts. Breast implants removal surgery is sought for several reasons:

Age – breast implants may not be as important to a more mature woman. Also, the breasts can change in size naturally as a woman gets older;

Changes in weight – this can influence the size and shape of the breasts, which can also affect the way the implant sits in the breast.

Medical conditions – In some cases a person needs to have their implants removed for a medical reason, such as: if a cancer is suspected or found, if capsular contracture has formed (when scar tissue encases the implant) or there is a problem with the actual implant itself.

Breast Implant Removal And Uplift Procedure

Miss Breahna will always begin the treatment process by carrying out a full and thorough consultation, where she will discuss your concerns before examining your breasts. She will also give advice on how best to prepare for the surgery, as well as what to expect during your recovery.

The surgery itself is often carried out under a general anaesthetic – so you will be asleep throughout. Miss Breahna will then aim to make incisions where the original cuts were made. The breast implant is removed with the surrounding capsule where possible. The surgery is more complex than the original insertion of implants and requires drains, post-operatively.

In some cases breast enlargement has caused skin to become stretched, making the breasts appear to sag once the implants have been removed. This can be addressed with a breast uplift at the same time as breast implant removal to put the remaining breast volume back on top of the breast wall. Breast uplift can reshape the breast and give some upper pole fullness, avoiding a very deflated look. Breast lift scars are anchor-shaped; around the areola, vertical below the areola and in the breast fold.

Benefits Of Breast Implant Removal And Uplift

Breast implant removal can have a number of benefits, other than to achieve a more desirable size. Removing the implants can often relieve any discomfort that may have built up over time, especially if the implants have moved in position or capsular contracture has developed. Women who are over 50 are often asked to attend regular breast screening, and although technology has become more advanced, it may help to view the results of a mammogram in breasts that do not have implants.

Frequently asked questions

If you were found to be suitable to have the implants inserted, then you would also be suitable to have them removed. In some cases this procedure is chosen by the patient as the need for enlarged breasts has changed, in other cases it has been advised by a doctor.

This procedure is very safe and Miss Breahna will always take great care of you during the entire procedure, including before and after surgery.

Surgery is a painful experience but every step is taken to minimise your discomfort. The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and a course of pain relief will be administered for the few weeks that follow.

Your breasts will be red, swollen and bruised in response to the surgery. These effects will often last for 4 – 6 weeks, and you will be given some post-operative advice to ensure you heal effectively. Surgery will also leave behind some scarring. However, with carefully placed incisions and caring for your wounds sufficiently often produces discreet scarring that will fade over time.

Recovery may take around 4 weeks. After this time the swelling should have significantly reduced and you should generally feel much more comfortable. It is important to take it easy as your body heals, only resuming normal activity levels when it is comfortable to do so.
