Fat Transfer To Breasts / Lipofilling

Fat transfer (Lipofilling or autologous fat injections) to breast, is a procedure whereby fat is taken from one area of the body (usually the abdomen and inner thighs) and inserted into the breasts.

Whilst becoming more and more popular, fat transfer to the breast is not a replacement for breast enlargement using silicone implants, which is still the best procedure for those who want to achieve two or more cup size increase.

Fat Transfer Breast Enlargement Proceduire

During the fat transfer for breast augmentation procedure, unwanted fat is extracted from an area of the body, such as the thighs or stomach, by inserting a small cannula. The area is then stitched and dressed. The extracted fat is then spun in a purpose made machine, so that any blood or fluid is separated. The fat is then injected into the breast in small amounts by using a syringe; stitching is not usually required as the injection holes are tiny.

Fat Transfer to Breast Recovery

Due to the nature of the fat transfer surgery, an overnight stay in hospital may be required. Follow-up appointments will be arranged at 1, 2 and 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year post surgery to closely monitor your physical well-being. Surgical supportive garments will need to be worn post-operatively for up to 12 weeks to assist the healing process and alleviate the discomfort associated with mobilisation.

Frequently asked questions

A suitable candidate for lipofilling would have a preference of enhancing their breast size and shape without having implants and is content to accept an increase of up to one cup size. You must also have the available fat deposits! Best results are seen in people who maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, and keep their body well hydrated and their weight steady.

The fat transfer to breast surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic to eliminate any pain during the procedure itself. Post-operatively, you are likely to experience some discomfort, which may take a couple of weeks to subside. A course of pain relief will be prescribed.

There is likely to be some swelling, bruising and temporary numbness, following this lipofilling procedure, which will ease within 2 – 3 weeks post treatment. Uncommon risks include infection, asymmetry, bleeding, fat necrosis, oil cysts, benign calcifications and difficulty with mammogram interpretations and excessive loss of fat cells.

This fat transfer procedure may incur a period of 2 weeks recovery time, to allow for successful healing, and time off work may be required. Driving will be possible after 2 weeks. It may need up to 3 weeks before travelling abroad and 6 weeks before returning to the gym.
