Hand Surgery Procedures

Tendon Surgery

Used to correct Trigger Finger and De Quervain’s Disease, a small incision is made on the palm of the hand or on the wrist, releasing the tendon by making a cut to the skin that covers it.

Hand Surgery for Arthritis

Repairing the damage from arthritis can be by way of Joint Fusion (re-connecting the affected joint), Joint Replacement (completely replacing the knuckle with an implant) or a Trapeziectomy (removing a small bone in the thumb, called the Trapezium, to create more room for the thumb to move), to alleviate pain.

Treatment Of Ganglion Cysts

These can be removed by draining the fluid with a syringe (Aspiration), or by cutting it out. Draining the fluid is a less invasive procedure, does not leave any wounds and is relatively painless. Cutting the cyst out involves an incision over the site and removing the cyst before the skin is closed with sutures.

Treatment Of Dupuytrens Disease

This condition can be treated in various ways: with Xiapex (collagenase) injections, Needle Aponeurotomy or open fasciectomy. All these procedures aim to straighten the fingers and not to cure the disease, hence there is a chance for the disease to come back, requiring further treatment

Nerve Surgery

When Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is treated with surgery, an incision is made in the wrist to enable a cut on the Carpal Tunnel ligament and release the pressure upon the nerve. For a Cubital Tunnel release, incisions are made on the inside of the elbow and then deeper within, in order to make a cut on the Cubital tunnel and release the pressure on the nerves within.

Conditions that develop in the hand can often become troublesome. Having surgery to correct these problems improves hand function and can help ameliorate any pain that is frequently suffered as a result. A variable period of physiotherapy with a specialist hand therapist will be recommended to help achieve the best outcome.

Why choose the Best Hand Surgery in UK?

Hand surgery is important. After all, your hands do so much for you. They are capable of a wide variety of functions: touching, grasping, feeling, holding, manipulating, caressing thus enabling you to work, play and socialise.

Any problems involving your hands can have a devastating effect on your being able to carry on routine daily tasks.

Prompt diagnosis and careful surgical planning are essential in order to minimise the difficulties caused by illness or injuries to the hands.

Frequently asked questions

If a common hand problem has caused you significant pain or affected the hand’s ability to function effectively over a period of time, then you may be suitable for surgical treatment.

Hand problems can sometimes be treated without the need for surgical intervention, and a detailed discussion with Miss Breahna during your consultation will help you choose the right treatment for you.

A suitable anaesthetic will be used to perform the procedure, with a course of pain relief to follow up with for a recommended period.

Swelling and bruising are likely after hand surgery – which will resolve in a matter of weeks.

Infrequent complications are infections, bleeding (haematoma), delayed wound healing, poor scarring, stiffness and chronic pain syndrome. Specific risks to each procedure will be discussed with you during your consultation with Miss Breahna.

Each surgical procedure may incur slightly differing amounts of downtime. Hand surgery does not usually require an overnight stay, but time off work may be required. Driving will not be advised until you will be comfortable in making an emergency stop or you may invalidate your insurance.
