Liposuction

Liposuction – also known as ‘Lipoplasty’, ‘Liposculpture’ or just ‘Lipo’  – is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing localised deposits of fat where diet and exercise are not addressing the problem.

A commonly sought cosmetic procedure, Liposuction can treat a variety of areas on the body, including: arms, legs, thighs (saddle bags), buttocks, hips (love handles), bra rolls, abdomen, chin, and over-developed male breasts.

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is performed under general aesthetic by inserting a cannula under the skin through small incisions (cuts made in the skin), to break up the fatty tissue. A device is then attached to the cannula to suck out the fat, the cuts are stitched and a post surgical compression garment (liposuction corset/ shorts) is applied. The compression garment will be needed for six weeks 24/7.

The procedure can be done as a day case stay when small areas are treated but often requires an overnight stay.

Liposuction Recovery and Aftercare

The next few weeks will require gentle recovery and time off work may need to be taken. An aftercare plan will be put in place whereby you will need to wear compression garments and take painkillers. After 2 weeks you can massage the treated areas and use professional manual lymphatic drainage on a regular basis.

Follow-up appointments will be arranged at 1, 2 and 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year post surgery to closely monitor your physical well-being.

The full effects from this procedure can be seen within 3-6 months. It is advisable to maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight in order to continue to experience the benefits of having this surgery, possessing an improved contour of your body.

Frequently asked questions

If you are looking to reduce areas of stubborn fat, despite maintaining a healthy diet and exercise, then you are likely to be suitable for liposuction surgery. It is important for you to understand that Liposuction is not intended for weight reduction. The best candidates are those who are close to, or just above, their ideal body weight and have areas such as abdomen and hips that out of proportion to other areas. It may not be suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The operation itself will be performed under general anaesthetic, undertaken by a consultant anaesthetist. Most people report that they are quite sore for a week or more and a course of painkillers will be administered post-operatively.

Frequent side effects are swelling, bruising, scarring and temporary numbness which will improve after a few months. Wearing a tight fitting elastic compression garment is recommended to reduce swelling of the treated areas. Less common risks include bleeding, wound infection, scars (poor scarring and keloid scars), uneven and asymmetric results, rippling, dimpling, loose skin, fluid collection under the skin (seroma), skin discoloration, permanent loss of sensation, problems with general anaesthetic and clots in the legs and lungs.

Most people can return to work anywhere between a few days and two weeks following liposuction surgery, and light activities can be resumed after six weeks. Driving will be possible after 2 -3 weeks. It may need up to 4 weeks before travelling abroad and up to 12 weeks before returning to the gym.
