Thigh Lift

Also called a ‘thighplasty’, a thigh lift is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin from the inner thigh area, to produce a firmer, more balanced contour.

Significant weight loss is the main cause of sagging skin on the thighs. Whilst achieving a healthy weight brings a good feeling, the excess skin that is left behind often leaves the person feeling too self conscious to wear a swimming costume. It can also occur after large amounts of liposuction or as part of the normal ageing process.

The surgery is undertaken under general anaesthetic. The excess skin along the inner thighs is measured with a pinch technique, marked and removed and the underlying tissue is reshaped and tightened. There are several thighplasty techniques and, depending on the amount of skin excess, the incisions may be limited to the groin crease alone or they may extend along the inside of thigh, towards the knee.
A compression garment is recommended for 6 – 8 weeks postoperatively, to control swelling and promote healing. After 2 weeks you can commence massaging the treated areas and professional manual lymphatic drainage on a regular basis. Follow-up appointments will be arranged at 1, 2 and 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year post surgery to closely monitor your physical well-being.

Frequently asked questions

A person who has sagging skin on the inner thighs as a result of ageing or weight loss, and is seeking to improve the shape of their legs, is a suitable candidate for this treatment. This procedure is not intended as an alternative to weight management, and a healthy weight and BMI are criteria that must be met before treatment is decided upon.

This treatment is performed under general anaesthetic. There will be a degree of pain experienced after the procedure due to the nature of the surgery and a suitable course of pain relief will be administered.

Common side effects are bruising and swelling that will ease after a couple of weeks. There will also be some permanent scarring from the incisions, which should fade and become smoother over time. Extensive scarring (hypertrophic, widened), bleeding (haematoma) and the need to return to theatre, infection, delayed wound healing, fat necrosis, skin numbness, skin necrosis and asymmetry. Clots in the legs/ lungs are less common, but are still possible risks which may occur. Miss Breahna strongly advises you to stop smoking prior to surgery as this can affect the outcome of your surgery and significantly increase the risks of complications.

This procedure may incur a period of 3 weeks recovery time to allow for successful healing, and time off work may be required. Driving will be possible after 2 – 3 weeks. It may need up to 4 weeks before travelling abroad and up to 6 weeks before returning to the gym.
